Midlands State University’s Professor Gift Mehlana Clinches Prestigious Global Chemistry Award

On Thursday, 2 October 2025, in Rio de Janeiro, Professor Gift Mehlana, the Acting Executive Director of Research and Innovation at Midlands State University (MSU), was awarded the esteemed TWAS–Atta-ur-Rahman Award in Chemistry, a premier international accolade that celebrates scientific excellence and its role in sustainable development within science-lagging nations.

The award, established by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) with the support of UNESCO and named in honour of the eminent scientist Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, is a definitive mark of global recognition.

It acknowledges not only a researcher’s significant contributions to the chemical sciences but, critically, their work in strengthening research capacity and inspiring young scientists in developing countries.

In a powerful statement following the ceremony at the 17th TWAS General Conference, Professor Mehlana articulated the profound significance of the award, framing it as a victory far beyond personal achievement.

“I am deeply humbled to be awarded the 2025 TWAS-Atta-ur-Rahman Award in Chemistry,” Professor Mehlana stated. “For me, this award is not just a personal milestone; it is a celebration of the people, institutions, and communities that have shaped my research career.”

He emphasised the award’s role in validating the world-class research emerging from Zimbabwe.

“This award affirms that our efforts, often carried out in resource-limited settings, can resonate on the international stage. It is proof that world-class science can emerge from Zimbabwe, and that African researchers are contributing solutions to challenges that affect both the continent and the world.”

Central to Professor Mehlana’s acceptance was a focus on the next generation.

He highlighted the award’s potential to ignite ambition across the continent, noting, “When young students see someone from their own continent receive international recognition, it reinforces the idea that excellence in science is not limited by geography or resources, but is driven by passion, resilience, and vision.”

The professor was also quick to share the credit, paying tribute to the collective effort behind his success.

“Science is never a solitary journey,” he reflected. “I owe immense gratitude to my mentors, my students, my colleagues, and international collaborators. Above all, I thank Midlands State University for providing the platform to carry out my research, and my family for their unwavering support.”

Looking ahead, Professor Mehlana framed the accolade not as a conclusion, but as a catalyst for future endeavour.

“Receiving this award is not the end of the journey; it is a call to action,” he declared. “It challenges me to push beyond boundaries, to innovate boldly, and to ensure that the research we do today contributes to a better and more sustainable tomorrow.”

This prestigious award solidifies Midlands State University’s growing reputation as a leading hub of innovation and research excellence in Africa, demonstrating a potent capacity to produce globally significant scholarship that addresses the most pressing challenges of our time.
