Midlands State University’s (MSU) Faculty of Science and Technology held a research seminar in the Senate Room at the Gweru Main Campus on 09 September 2026, bringing together academics and students to showcase scientific solutions to contemporary challenges and advance national development.
Delivering the keynote address, Acting Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Dr. R. J. Mapaya, focused on translating scientific inquiry into actionable real-world outcomes.
“Research and innovation must go beyond the laboratory and address the challenges faced by our communities and industries,” said Dr Mapaya.
Focusing on local ecological resources, a presentation titled “From forest conservation to sustainable development: Harnessing medicinal plants and non-timber products for community resilience and biodiversity stewardship in Zimbabwe” was delivered by Dr. B. Parirenyatwa, a lecturer in the Department of Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology.
“Medicinal plants and non-timber forest products have the potential to strengthen community resilience while promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable development,” said Dr Parirenyatwa.
Her presentation highlighted practical strategies to harness indigenous natural resources for local economic stability while protecting biodiversity for future generations.
Expanding on the theme of sustainable innovation, a presentation titled “Beyond the Flask: How Continuous Flow Technology Could Transform Chemical Manufacturing in Africa” detailed advanced manufacturing possibilities, presented by Dr. M. Sagandira, an MSU lecturer in the Department of Chemical Sciences.
Vibrant question-and-answer sessions followed each presentation, allowing undergraduate students, postgraduates, and senior academics to interrogate methodologies and exchange critical perspectives.
In his closing remarks, Dr. W. Sengweni, an MSU lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, expressed his appreciation to the organisers, presenters and participants for their valuable contributions.
The seminar underscored the University’s commitment to harnessing research and scientific expertise to drive innovation, strengthen communities and contribute to national development in line with Vision 2030.
