Midlands State University’s (MSU) Professor of Community Medicine, under the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Professor Davison Munodawafa, was honoured with the Health Sciences Award at the 14th Zimbabwe International Research Symposium held at the Harare International Conference Centre on 19 June 2026.
The award was presented during a ceremony officiated by His Excellency, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde. Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, under the theme, “Exploring the Nexus Between Artificial Intelligence, Research, Innovation and Sustainable Community Development.”
Recognised for his pioneering research on strengthening primary healthcare systems for the prevention, surveillance and management of non-communicable diseases in rural Zimbabwe, Professor Munodawafa has generated critical evidence that continues to shape policy discussions and inform decision-making at district, national and international levels.
Professor Munodawafa’s work is centred on health systems strengthening, with a particular focus on health promotion, social determinants of health, non-communicable disease prevention and control, public health emergencies, social and behavioural change, research and evaluation, and institutional partnerships.
As non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer and cardiovascular conditions continue to place growing pressure on healthcare systems, his research provides practical, evidence-based and sustainable solutions that improve access to quality healthcare where it is needed most.
Through implementation research conducted in rural communities, he has championed innovative approaches that empower primary care nurses, strengthen community participation and improve the early detection and management of chronic diseases.
Professor Munodawafa’s contribution extends beyond research excellence to scholarship, knowledge generation, policy influence and the cultivation of national and global partnerships that advance public health and strengthen healthcare systems.
His work continues to bridge the gap between research and practice, ensuring that scientific knowledge translates into meaningful improvements in the lives of communities.
The award affirms Midlands State University’s reputation as a hub of transformative research that responds to national priorities, contributing to sustainable development.
