Midlands State University and POTRAZ Forge Landmark Partnership to Pioneer AI-Driven Healthcare Solutions

GWERU, 28 January 2026 – In a significant stride towards harnessing artificial intelligence for national health advancement, Midlands State University (MSU) has formalised a strategic partnership with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ).

A Memorandum of Agreement and accompanying grant contract were signed at a ceremony held at the University’s main campus, signalling a committed joint venture into pioneering AI research for medical diagnosis, with a particular focus on cancer.

The agreement secures essential funding and collaborative support for groundbreaking research to be executed through the MSU National Pathology Research and Diagnostic Centre (MSUNPRDC).

The initiative positions MSU at the forefront of developing locally relevant, technology-driven solutions for Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector.

Professor G. Mehlana, Executive Director for Research and Innovation at MSU, welcomed the POTRAZ delegation, underscoring the transformative potential of the collaboration.

“This grant contract heralds a new chapter for healthcare innovation in Zimbabwe,” stated Professor Mehlana.

“There is immense hope for AI-driven solutions, particularly in diagnostics, and this research will be spearheaded by our dedicated team at the MSUNPRDC. Our focus is on delivering tangible, pioneering research in AI and health diagnosis, addressing critical national priorities such as cancer.”

Representing POTRAZ, Innovation Officer Mr. Gotora expressed confidence in the University’s capacity to deliver.

“We are optimistic that Midlands State University will develop an innovative product of the highest standard,” said Mr. Gotora.

He further emphasised the imperative of rigorous compliance, noting, “Given the heavily regulated nature of the health sector, adherence to all standards and protocols is paramount for the success and adoption of any resultant technology.”

In delivering the vote of thanks, University Librarian Ms. N. P. Chibanda extended gratitude to POTRAZ for its sustained partnership with the institution.

“This gesture continues a history of fruitful collaboration,” Ms. Chibanda remarked.

“The university has always worked closely with POTRAZ, and we pledge to deliver faithfully on the commitments made here today.”

The documents were signed by Mrs. S. Masuku, the University’s Acting Registrar, on behalf of MSU, with Professor Mehlana acting as witness.

Mr. Gotora and Ms. Magaya signed as representatives of POTRAZ.

This partnership underscores MSU’s growing profile as a centre of research excellence and its commitment to leveraging Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies for societal benefit.

The project undertaken through the MSUNPRDC is anticipated to contribute substantially to the national health innovation ecosystem.
